David Best likes building things and then burning them. His creative pyromania has now reached London, a place famous for great fires. Below are some photographs from various photographers in the promo of lighting the kindling structures later this evening, marking the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London.
The final image is of Best’s 2015 project Temple in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. This was his 9th such temple, created to symbolise the incineration of past burdens, loss and suffering. The burning of London this evening is unlikely to hold the same weight of transformative significance – with the sense of loss and tragedy consigned to history – instead offering a momentary spectacle, an event, and perhaps a symbol of London’s rapid and dynamic changes through the centuries.
