La Sagrada Familia – 2026

That amazing it is almost grotesque – an elaborate honour to natural forms in stone. When visiting this building site as a 16-year-old it had an impact on me that I could not fully comprehend at the time. Like many great cathedrals, it was awe-inspiring in scale and ambiance. Great shafts of light poured down through the yet complete roof, whilst freshly carved rock was hoisted up into the rafters for careful placement. I could barely believe we were allowed to access the live site of the birth of an architectural dragon. The fact that this was one was being born before me was unlike anything I had encountered to date. It became of the founding reasons that I chose to become an architect.

There is something disgustingly beautiful about La Sagrada Familia. Its over-the-top elaborateness defies the modern practices of minimalism and taste but of course, it predates these modern ideas. The essence of the struggle of chaos and order in nature is found here, the overwhelming stranglehold of twisted vines and blossoming flowers intermingled into a tightly knit plumage.

Underlying all is the hidden rule of mathematics just like in all nature, Fibonacci’s sequence. However, Gaudi’s mathematics is experimental; physically as in its structural conception, and metaphorically like a physicist trying to understand the natural laws of the universe.

I could barely believe we were allowed to access the live site of the birth of an architectural dragon – scaley and magnificent. The fact that this was one was being born before me was unlike anything I had encountered to date. It became one of the founding reasons that I chose to become an architect.

The following video shows the future phases of the building:
