Zumthor’s Steilneset Memorial

This memorial designed by architect Peter Zumthor commemorates suspected witches who were burned at the stake on a Norwegian island in the seventeenth century.

Elements of the building reflect the programme, for example the inside corridor, light bulbs hang behind 91 windows to represent the people who had been put to death as result of the witch trials.
