Meandering Mississippi

Of course mapping plays a pivotal role in architecture. Cartography in its various forms enables us to see spaces and imagine their potential through different means of layer information.

Some of the most beautiful images i have found are Harold N. Fisk’s Maps of the Mississippi.

The monumental collection was produced in 1944 Fisk, who drew the many courses the river had taken, each colour representing a different meander changing its course as it has flooded over time.

The maps were created as part of an otherwise technocratic report for the Army Corps of Engineers, Fisk’s maps of the historical traces of the Mississippi River are a wonderful suprise.

Presented here is the entire series together.
